Drumroooools!  There’s a new section on the blog that has been in the pipeline for a while now. A boss babe category! A section  that will highlight amazing women doing amazing stuff in the society and moving mountains. Because if we do not write our own stories who’s gonna? So ergo, meet our first boss babe…nah scratch that our SUPER first boss babe Angie. I met Angela last year and she is a truckload  of fresh air and lots of energy!

Angela Kariuki is a 31 year old mother of two, an investment banker by day but a fashion lover by passion. She says fashion is what her heart aches for. Angela is employed full time and also runs her own boutique- Angie’s Closet . She lives in Nairobi, Kenya. Here’s Angie for you. Everything  she wears here is from her store.

How old were you when you started your first job?
I was 23 when I got my first job as an assistant accountant.

What is the best and worst decision you have ever made?

Best decision: Following my heart and starting my fashion business. It’s a breath of fresh air, a reason to live and do it in fullness.

Worst decision: Not believing in myself as often as I should.

What is the biggest challenge for females in  leadership?

The stereotype that women cannot be heads, not many would agree to follow a woman’s leadership and especially in high positions and we end up losing out on good leadership.

Which 2 women inspire you and why?

Wandia Gichuru of Vivo active wear:  For coming up with a locally made clothing line which has become a very popular brand penetrating the local market massively.

Internationally, Ellen DeGeneres , for standing alone against the whole world, not conforming to the society and still being able to touch the hearts of many with her work – she is amazing!

What would you tell your 20-year-old self?
Do not be afraid of walking into unfamiliar territories, push yourself beyond your limits. Dare to dream.

How’s a day in Angela’s life like?

I am up by 6.30 a.m (after snoozing my alarm for 20 minutes). I drop my kids to school by 7.30 a.m and make a stop over at the shop to go through any overnight online orders which I leave with my shop attendant to organize for deliveries as I dash to the office by 9 a.m (9.30 a.m, technically) I leave the office at 3 p.m and head back to the shop then head home at 6 p.m. I then spend few hours with the kids and they are in bed by 8.30 p.m. I go to bed by 12 a.m. (I am a late night person, not a morning one)

You are our boss babe of the week, tell us about your company?
My company is almost 2 years old now and I have been making baby steps. I started by shopping two extra items and selling them to my friends and soon the demand grew and now I run a shop, online and a physical one. My ultimate goal is to also offer image consultation and other related services. My mission is to transform how women look and feel about themselves and make them more confident in themselves.

What are the challenges you have had to deal with in your business?

Not having enough time to manage the business. It feels like I need an extra 12 hours in my days.

Striking a balance with the various aspects of my life, the business being a small baby which also needs lots of nurturing.
Dealing with dead stock, not everything gets to move as fast as expected.
Stiff competition in the market which makes you think of how to add value to your clients.

How do you unwind?

I do zumba classes whenever I get time.
I go out and dance, once in a while

What makes you jump out of bed in the morning?
The thought of what I will wear for the day!

This blog is all about living a wholesome life. How do you achieve a work-life balance? (Did we mention, Angie also writes a blog ?)

It’s such a difficult thing to do but I try to have a plan and schedule for the many things that require my attention.

Any hobbies?

I love dancing.

Beauty secrets you swear by?

Well groomed eyebrows and well maintained lips, any day any time!!!!

If  we asked 3  people that know you to describe you in 3 words what would they say?

I do me!
