FIRST YOGA CLASS

FIRST YOGA CLASS

So my girlfriend invited me to yoga with her a few weeks ago. I was super excited! The place was Shine, Africa Yoga project at Diamond plaza. You can check them out on Facebook or on their website . We settled for Saturday 10 a.m. They have a donation community class every  Saturday. I packed up some workout clothes and got ready to find my way ( because I live and work in Nairobi and have no idea where Diamond Plaza is) I was running late. By this time my friend had been in  the class for 1 hour. I made it for the last 45 mins. All phones and bags are kept away so no distractions in the studio.

Culture Shock
Then the shock begins…..
I am ushered upstairs, I ask the gentleman why I can’t be downstairs. He says just go upstairs. At the end of the stairs, I stumble into  a hot room(stumble because the room began where the staircase landing ended). Are we doing bikram Yoga? The room is too hot, people are sweating. I find a mat and lie down. The only yoga position I know from watching stuff on media is downward dog. People are fluid and flexible and more fluid. My mat is in between 2 gentlemen, both topless (insert excitement) but wait I thought yoga was for chics only. There is a 50/50 gender balance here. The yogi goes over some instructions. Am I the only newbie here? Just as I am getting in sync with everyone, instructor asks people to balance upside down. I mimic the rest and hold the position to the end. When I put my body back on the mat, I feel this intense pain. I think I broke something, my spine,my spleen maybe I crushed my heart? Can someone call the ambulance? The guy next to me is so relaxed.  The pain goes away after 3 minutes. We do a few more poses. I am too curious to relax. I can’t help look and peep around. For the last poses, the lights are suddenly turned off. Why are we in the dark? Everyone else is relaxed and breathing in and out peacefully. The yogi has now switched to full blown yoga terms. Class has ended. I look forward to more classes and to actual relaxation. Wait. I can’t find my
shoes.

After the class we gave our donations. I loved the yoga project and I will definitely be going for more . Have you done yoga before? How did you actually get to relax and breathe on the first day?

  1. I never went to yoga, though heard about it longtime ago. I guess I was never convinced that is a better way to relax than the traditional ones.

  2. ahaha this was hilarious Lol I can’t actually imagine you trying to act all cool but in your mind all these thoughts and wondering why is everyone else doing so good ahah thank you for this 🙂 loved it! And I’m sure you’ll be fab next time 🙂

    1. I know right. Especially because everyone else is so fluid and effortless and boneless. I will need 5 more takes to get there.

  3. LOL, very funny post. I have always done yoga though not in the commercial in-your-face ways that the western media shows us everywhere. It annoys me when there is cultural appropriation without due credit and modern versions of yoga is so far from the original concept that it is unbelievable.. I learnt yoga from my grandma in chennai, India. For me at least, Yoga is also just breathing correctly, completely relaxing one’s mind and getting to know one’s body. Its actually a lot of listening inwards through one’s body. Never tried bikram yoga though. Will try it out.

    1. I have only come across commercial yoga. The traditional version must be really calming and something I would love to try. Bikram yoga on my list but my hair and the humidity!

  4. Haha this gave me a good laugh. I attend classes at shine center whenever possible and its awesome!. Haha i love how people are shocked when they attend their first yoga class and realize how physical it can get Hehe..always a shock. Happy you tried it.
